Prof. Emeritus Roger Van den Bergh (Ph.D.)

Prof. Roger Van den Bergh is Professor Emeritus of Law and Economics at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. After receiving his degree and Ph.D. in Law at the University of Antwerp in 1982, he was Associate Professor at the University of Antwerp and Professor at the Universities of Utrecht and Hamburg. Appointed Professor at the Erasmus University Rotterdam in 1998, he founded the Rotterdam Institute of Law and Economics.

Prof. Roger Van den Bergh has been Research Fellow and Visiting Professor at several universities in Europe and in the United States, including Aix-en-Provence, Oslo, Moscow, LUISS “Guido Carli” Rome, Haifa, Bologna and New York. He has extensively published both in books and leading journals on Competition Law & Economics, European Law & Economics, Tort Law & Insurance, and Harmonisation of Laws. He has been member of the editorial boards of several scientific journals, such as the American Review of Law and Economics and the Journal of Consumer Policy.

Prof. Roger Van den Bergh is Honorary Research Fellow at the Law & Economics LAB. He was President of the European Association of Law and Economics from 1987 to 2001, Director from 2000 to 2005 and Erasmus Mundus Coordinator from 2004 to 2012 of the European Master in Law and Economics. He retired in 2018 after a symposium and valedictory lecture held at the Erasmus University Rotterdam in honour of his 30 years of academic research and pioneering activity in the field of Law and Economics.
